WHAT IS MACULAR DEGENERATION?AM I AT RISK FOR IT AFFECTING MY EYE HEALTH?
Macular degeneration is the most common cause of vision loss, and can be defined as the degeneration of the macula, the central part of the retina, which focuses visual stimuli in your eyes. As the macula becomes further damaged, your vision will become blurred until it is completely lost. However, peripheral vision is maintained as only the retina is affected.
Research is inconclusive on what causes AMD, but experts suspect that it may be passed on through hereditary means. Patients with AMD also tend to be older in age.
How is Macular Degeneration Treated?
Unfortunately, there is no cure or treatment currently available to reverse the effects of macular degeneration. However, an ophthalmologist will be able to diagnose it early if it is present in your eyes. They'll be able to educate you on certain changes you can implement such as changes to diet, physical activity, and lifestyle that may slow its progression. We can also assist you with corrective vision lenses that can help with any immediate effects.
What Are the Stages of Macular Degeneration?
Ophthalmologists can characterize AMD in three specific stages. The first of these is early stage AMD, which is difficult, if not impossible, for the individual to notice as it features no eye pigment or vision changes. Intermediate AMD will see more pigment changes and some possible mild vision loss, but not necessarily. The final stage of AMD results in one of two types of AMD that notably impair vision.
